Cortland Christian Academy

At CCA, we believe every human being is made in the image of God. Creativity is one of the attributes of God, first mentioned in Genesis 1:1, which we seek to cultivate in our students. Music is referenced numerous times throughout scripture, in praise to God and for the encouragement of the saints (Ephesians 5:18-21; Psalm 150). We seek to provide an environment within which students may grow in knowledge of and experience in singing, playing instruments, reading music,  appreciating music from varying cultures and genres, and working together as a group. All of this is done with the aim of growing in musicality to the Glory of God and the encouragement of others.

Music Opportunities at CCA
CCA offers a vibrant music program for students from Preschool through twelfth grade, giving every child the opportunity to grow in confidence, creativity, and musical skill. Students participate in two school-wide concerts each year—one during the Christmas season and one in the spring—where they share what they have learned with family, friends, and the school community.

Music for Every Grade Level
Preschool students enjoy music class as they learn songs to sing for concerts and special programs. Students in Kindergarten through eighth grade participate in both music class and singing or choir class, developing vocal skills while also exploring rhythm, melody, and musical expression.

Instrument Exploration and Lessons
Students have the opportunity to try a variety of instruments beginning in fourth grade and may start formal lessons in fifth grade. Throughout their school years, students are introduced to instruments such as boom whackers, resonator bells, recorders, keyboards, ukuleles, and more. Paid piano lessons are also available through a CCA staff member for families who are interested.

Advanced Performance Opportunities
Middle and high school students who wish to grow further in vocal or instrumental performance may participate in the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA). Through NYSSMA, students prepare required music, perform live for a trained adjudicator, and receive a standardized score along with written feedback to help guide their continued growth.
Strong NYSSMA scores may also qualify students for additional honors and ensembles, including opportunities such as All-State Choir, All-State Orchestra, and All-County Band.
High school choir students may also participate in the Cedarville Music Showcase, a two-day event held at Cedarville University in Ohio that brings together students from across the country to rehearse, collaborate, and perform in a final concert.
